Donate a Horse

At Discovery Riders our horses are an essential component to our activities.  We are able to provide quality, safe, effective equine activities and therapies because of the quality of horse we have in our program.  We acquire horses through generous donations or individuals loan/lease us their horses for a period of time not less than a year.

All horses must meet the following criteria:

animals-farm-horses-9582.jpg

  • be physically sound and healthy

  • have a cooperative and confident attitude

  • trained to walk, trot, and canter with a rider

  • enjoy being with people

  • be at least 5 years old

  • vaccinated within the last year

  • a negative Coggins test

  • hoof care within the last 90 days

  • pass a 60 or 90 day trial period

The horses used at our program are ridden by varying levels of riders from beginner to more advanced walk-trot-canter lessons.  Therefore, the horses must be fit, sound, and balanced in order to give several lessons a day to our participants.

All horse will be ridden and examined before being accepted for a trial period which includes a signed Trial Agreement.  After the trial period and acceptance of the equine, we will either complete a lease agreement with you or complete donation paper work.

All donors are given first right of refusal in the event the horse needs to retire from work at our Program. Any horse being retired from our program goes to home with good references from at least 2 sources and uses a vet and farrier on a regular basis.
